Unit 2 - The External Exam
Openings
My chosen Unit 2 theme:
Openings such as doors and windows are important parts of the composition in some of the photographic work of Lee Friedlander and Andreas Gursky. Dragan Todorovic often uses the light that comes from openings, such as doors or windows, to emphasise a subject or to create a silhouette.
Andreas Gursky born in Leipzig and grew up in Dusseldorf. He the son and grandson of commercial photographers. Andreas Gursky makes large-scale, colour photographs distinctive for their critical look at the effect of capitalism and globalisation on contemporary life.
Gursky is known for his architecture and landscape colour photographs often using a high point of view.

"I am never interested in the individual, but in the human species and its environment."
iPod Photos
These were my first set of images I took before making much research on any of the opening artist listed. These images show my thoughts of what I personally thought openings were, by looking through windows, doors and hallways. I often liked to capture images of doors in the mids of closing as I thought that was a way of showing that a doors are new openings leading to a endless path.
We keep moving forward, opening new doors, and doing new things, because we're curious and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.
This is one of my favourite images I've taken out of the set of images. I used a photo filter app called Hueless which I also photographed the image in. This is one of my favourite photos taken from this set because of the way I've captured it even though it is not a straight photo and looks abstracted. I also like the way I've captured a group of people walking through the bin.

I also like this image of a school stair way looking out of a window. I like the way the window has framed the photo and narrowed the image down so you can only see exactly whats in front and nothing from either side. However I don't exactly like that fact that this image is very dull and dark but this shows that there was not light near by apart from the lighting coming in from outside.

iPhone Photography
These images were taking on a wander around school. I was original taking a image of the landscape through the doors framing the photo. I then noticed that there was a painting on hanging on the wall. I then started to move around the orange floored hallway, then went onto capturing the reflections of the paint via a door window in the images using the reflection you can see a slight line of sunlight going through the reflection. I quite like these images a the fact the door frames the reflection.
South London by Car
These were my first set of images in response to Friedland America by Car. When taking these images I used an iPhone to take these images. These images were not all the best but there are some which were captured nicely. some are blurred as they were taking in a moving car. I like the images taken looking over the dashboard through the front wind screen as well as some of the ones looking through the rear windscreen. I like this because I've captured a the phone via two lens... the camera lens and the car window, I like the fact that mirror reflects whats happening behind the car.

I took these images using an iPhone at 5:57am one morning, from my bedroom window

Final Pieces
These are both my final pices of unit 2 external exam. After a long journey of taking hundreds of photos travelling around the amazing London city capturing moments ever so precisely which will never happen again, but now have still images to look back at and help remember where I was, what I could see, as well as then time of day it was, busy and congested.
My first final piece abrove all the images used are captured on a moving train from Blackheath to Charing Cross station looking through a train window. There are some defaults of this final piece which I could have done better like capturing the window frame to frame the pictures so that it shows that I've thought about it more in depth however if I was to do that I wouldn't have been able to see the buildings as well. On the other hand they are a excellent set of images as they all link to one another in some way that they all have a building in as well as there is something that distracts the image for example the crane which is inbetween the Shard and another building nearby shows that there is activity taking place. |
This is one of my most sucessful final pieces as it is a prefect response to Lee Friandland America by Car however has been adapted to me but hasn't been changes too much. for example instead of doing the exact same thing I decided to coninute with the idea of Journies but insead of looking through a car window I choose to look through objects/things. With this set of images I've choose is looking through Windows like the Glass window of a Red telephone box door and a unique Glass esculator. Im really attached to this final piece as it's very original and real life nothing was planned for example the people in each image were just going aabout their every errand. I also really like the reflection of a Taxi on the Telephone boxs whilst someone goes pass.

Final Evaluation
I decided to choose the theme ‘Openings’. As I liked the thought that ‘everything has an opening to it’. From looking at the exam brief I looked at two photographers Lee Friedlander and Andreas Gursky, these were both photographers I had never seen images off. However from researching them both photographers, I’ve built on their techniques, and developed my own set of images and I am very pleased with both of my final pieces.
I researched both artist and looked through Frienlander books which gave me ideas for the photos I had taken. I mainly used my iPhone camera as it was always nearby and easy to access and allows me to be very flexible and with just one device I was able to cropping my images, adding effects and uploading them straight on to the web. However I only used my iPhone camera for majority of my responses to Friedlander ‘America by Car’, but for my final pieces I thought that I would use a DSLR camera to make sure my photographs came out not so pix-elated and looked presentable when both in A3 and A4. When using the DSLR camera I was able to zoom in and out, focus the camera and change shutter speed which allows me to make my photos original.
I used software like iPhoto and Photoshop as well as an app called Hueless to change the colour and brightness of my images. I think if I was to do this again I would be more experimental and try more things than just changing the colour of my images but being more creative. However from my first approach of openings I have developed and refined what I have done as well as stuck to my plan which makes me feel pleased with my final pieces.
I have a Tumblr blog as well as a Pinterest which I have keep relatively up to date which relate to my research which I have carried out. My Weebly website has been my main place where I have documented my learning which I have done using text posts, videos, slideshows, galleries and hyperlinks linking to other information to share what I have learned. When presenting my learning on my website a have tried to show what I have done, my research and experiments I have tried so that viewers are able to see what I have done and understand the process and the journey to receive my final outcome.
